A brief history of the Mountain Hotel Rothorn Kulm
The summit of the Rothorn Kulm may seem like the last place one would want to build a hotel but there has been accommodation here dating back to records from 1823. Even then adventurers and climbers were ascending the peak and were in need of refuge and accommodation.
By 1838 the first restaurant had been constructed and the Hotel Restaurant facility was in operation. Unfortunately in 1846 both buildings were destroyed by fire. Reconstruction was delayed by financial obstacles until, in 1866, the Hotel Investors Group was founded and final planning and rebuilding work could begin.
The resulting 33 room hotel and grand restaurant was completed with stables included. Fate however was playing a bad hand and the entire complex was once again burnt to the ground shortly afterwards.
In 1893 the third attempt was made to build the Rothorn Kulm Hotel, this was the basis of today’s building. There have been regular modernisations made and the facilities, as one would expect, have been much improved over the decades but todays hotel dates from 1893 shortly after the Brienz Rothorn Railway opened.
